Community Needs Assessment

Community Profile

The goal of the Community Profile (also called the community needs assessment) is to gather information about the community for the purpose of identifying gaps or needs in services that must be addressed to improve breast health among members of the community and identifying the populations most in need of breast health services.  It is used initially to identify the gaps between services that are currently provided and services that are needed.  However, when reviewed annually, it can also be used to evaluate the impact the local grant programs are having on the status of breast health within our community.

The Community Profile is a snapshot of the community at a specific point in time.  It is specifically looking at breast health and breast cancer.  The profile includes:
• demographics, such as population by age, race, ethnicity, education and income levels,
• breast cancer statistics, such as screening, incidence and mortality rates,
• an assessment of current services for breast cancer screening and treatment in the community,
• a survey of the community's beliefs and attitudes about breast cancer through interviews with key informants.

The Community Profile is a priority for the Phoenix Affiliate because the basic philosophies on which the organization was founded hinge on the ability to know the communities it serves.

Responsive
• The Phoenix Affiliate's community profile identifies specific ways we can be responsive to the needs of our service area and provide for those touched by breast cancer today.

Non-Duplicative
• The Komen organization carved its niche in the cancer environment by identifying and focusing on unmet needs.  The community profile allows the Phoenix Affiliate to identify and focus on the needs in our service area and to carve a niche in the local breast cancer environment.

Collaborative
• The Phoenix Affiliate's community profile helps to identify strategic partners in the local fight against breast cancer.  Partners may be potential grant recipients, donors, volunteers and other community nonprofits.
