About Komen

It began with a PromiseThe Komen Phoenix Affiliate was started by three members of the Junior League of Phoenix (JLP) to honor their friend who lost her life to breast cancer.  In 1993, JLP and Banner Health partnered to bring the Race for the Cure® to Phoenix.  That first Race drew 1,500 participants and raised $65,000. In 2007, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® with 37,000 participants and raised $1.9 million. This signature event draws thousands of survivors and supporters together each year to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, to honor those who have lost their battle with the disease, and to help raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

Since our beginnings in 1993, the Affiliate has raised over $13 million to fight breast cancer for research and the local STEP grant program (Screening, Treatment and Education Program)Up to 75% of all monies raised stays within our local community, and 25% funds the Komen Award and Research Grant Program.  In April 2008 the Affiliate granted over $2.3 million, monies raised by the 2007 Phoenix Race for the Cure and other local fundraising programs. $1.85 million was granted to providers in northern and central Arizona for breast health education, screening and treatment programs, and over $519,000 funded breast cancer research grants.

On behalf of the Phoenix Affiliate Board of Directors, we extend our sincere gratitude to our staff, volunteers, Race participants, donors, sponsors and those working in the community who help fulfill our mission to provide education, mammograms, screening and treatment for those in need.

Thank you!
