Free Screenings Help Underserved Communities

June 24, 2011

Every two years, Komen Phoenix conducts a community health needs assessment to help guide the Affiliate’s priorities and partnerships. The 2011 Community Profile Report, which will be finalized and released later this summer, has identified some of the community’s most pressing needs; among these are outreach and screening initiatives for African American, Native American and Hispanic women.

One of the Affiliate’s local grant recipients, Pink 365 – a campaign designed to educate women of color about breast health – is helping to reach these underserved markets through a series of free breast cancer screenings in partnership with Komen Phoenix, Well Woman Health Check and Walgreens (one of the newest sponsors of the Komen Race for the Cure® series!).

The free screenings will be held at several Valley Walgreens locations through July 19. Each screening can accommodate up to 50 participants. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome on a space-available basis.

Eligible participants must meet the following criteria:
• Be 40 or older
• Be uninsured or unable to pay insurance co-pay over $100.00
• Not have had a mammogram within a year
• Not be breastfeeding or pregnant
• Live in Maricopa County
• Not be eligible for AHCCCS
• Have a total household income of 101% - 250% above Federal Poverty Level
