Team Profile: Traci's Team Ta Ta

Breast cancer survivor Traci Hapke has always been active.
Even while undergoing chemotherapy several years ago, the Scottsdale woman never missed a day in the gym. It’s no surprise, then, that today Traci is inspiring others to “step up” as the captain of Traci’s Team Ta Ta at this year’s Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure.

Traci had participated in the event many years ago with her mom. But after her own breast cancer diagnosis in late 2007, it took on new meaning. So, in 2009, just days before the registration deadline, Traci recruited 10 friends to walk with her. Together, they raised over $1,000. The following year, her team of 53 raised more than $6,000.

This year, Traci has set a goal of 100 team members and $10,000 – and she’s well on her way. Working with local businesses to host community fundraising events in August and September, she is just a few dollars shy of her goal with several weeks still to go until the big day.

The last day to register a team or to register as a member of a team is Wednesday, Sept. 21!  Follow Traci’s helpful tips below to make your 2011 Race team bigger and better than ever:

• Ask everyone you know. Everyone has been affected by breast cancer and you never know who will be willing to help out.
• Even if they can’t attend the Race, friends and family can support your team by registering to Sleep In for the Cure, donating raffle items, or donating money directly to your team’s fundraising efforts.
• Communicate with your team often. Traci sends out weekly emails.
• Host a happy hour or other event and encourage everyone to bring someone new. Anyone can join your team – even if you’ve just met!

Traci isn’t shy about sharing her experience with others, and it has certainly paid off. “I like telling my personal story because I feel that it’s a positive one and shows a positive way to face this illness,” she says.

Having raised nearly $18,000 for the Komen Phoenix Affiliate, Traci is just one example of inspiring individuals who have stepped up to help deliver our promise. Take your first step today!
